Transformative Strategies for a Low-Carbon Future

  • PAE Building 151 SW 1st Avenue Portland, OR, 97204 United States (map)

Join Jacob Deva Racusin, Lead Researcher and BEAM Trainer with Builders for Climate Action and Director of Building Science and Sustainability with New Frameworks, as he explores the latest in building embodied carbon reduction. This session covers key developments in research, policy, standards, and technology, such as RESNET Standard 1550, the Massachusetts 100 Homes study, and equipment emission research. Racusin will also discuss the critical relationship between operational and embodied carbon, emphasizing combined strategies to optimize total carbon emissions without falling into common “payback” traps.

Racusin will further delve into the role of bio-based materials in embodied carbon reduction, including carbon storage accounting and opportunity for panelized off-site construction to scale high performance bio-based building technologies. He will connect regenerative land-based industries with sustainable building practices and address the building science behind durable bio-based materials. The event concludes with actionable strategies for transformational change in the building industry, focusing on collective impact, organizational alignment, and scaling efforts amid current economic and political challenges.
